Stanley W W. Jennings Obituary

It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Stanley W. Jennings (Kent, Connecticut), born in Sharon, Connecticut, who passed away at the age of 85, on August 14, 2023. Leave a sympathy message to the family in the guestbook on this memorial page of Stanley W. Jennings to show support.

Stan's parents Richard W. Jennings and Desdemona Jnet Segar were born in Kent, as was his brother Arnold. His father, Richard, was a dairy farmer and his mother was a housewife and raised their sons, Arnold and Stanley. Stanley was predeceased by his father in 1984, his mother in 1995, and his brother Arnold in 2000.

Stan was named after his great-granduncle; he was nick named “Stub” as a youngster because he was small as a child. At 6’3″ and weighing more than 225 lbs., he certainly wasn’t considered “small” later in life.

His elementary school was Kent Center School. He was a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School, class of 1956; Stan served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 until 1960 aboard the USS Willis A. Lee, a DL-4, from 1957 until 1960. He was a fire control technician (FT2) when discharged.

At 16 years of age, his first job was as a clerk at H.H. Taylor & Son when they had a business in Kent. His favorite job was working for the USPS as a mail processing mechanic in Hartford from 1993 until his retirement in 2000. He only worked for two other companies between Taylor & Son and the USPS.

Stan married Sandra R Dolan in 1979 and was stepfather to David Francis (Torrington) and Jean Marie (Atlanta, Ga.), and grandpa to Jean’s and Elizabeth’s children Tariku (16) and DeMarri (3). He and his wife, Sandra, were both longtime “friends of Bill W” and Stan sponsored many men in his 47 years of sobriety.

Stan was a certified Mayflower descendant of John Howland Jr. and George Soule. He was also a member of St. Luke’s Lodge No. 48 AF&AM. He was heavily involved in genealogy research and was also an avid golfer. He made a hole-in-one at the Fairfield Harbour Country Club, Harbour Pointe Course, New Bern, N.C., on Sept. 20, 2000, hole No. 17 with a 9 iron at a distance of 114 yards.

He and Sandra were passionate about lighthouses and traveled in their Winnebago when they retired, taking pictures of more than 400 U.S. lighthouses, in addition to many on Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

The staff of RVNA were a blessing to both Stan and Sandra. Their care and comfort were exemplary. A heartfelt thank you! is passed to all of them.

Cremated remains burial will be private. A celebration of life service will be on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at the First Congregational Church, 97 N. Main St. (Route 7), Kent, at 11 a.m.

Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, has been entrusted to care for Stanley and his family.
