He was predeceased by: his parents, Karl Nielsen and Margaret "Peg" Nielsen; and his brother Richard "Dick" Nielsen. He is survived by: his wife Joyce Nielsen; his children, David (Stephanie Nielsen), Christine (Scott Watrous), Erik Nielsen of Manchester and Adam (Hendriana Nielsen); his sister Joanne (Bruce Warren) of Framingham, MA; and his niece Kathy (Don Cusson) of Ellington.
