It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James Carter Nelson Sr. of Meriden, Connecticut, born in Oxford, North Carolina, who passed away on January 9, 2026, at the age of 83, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, James Matthew Nelson and Alice Mildred Nelson; his former wife Mary Helen Nelson; and his brother Allen Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Mary J. Bacote; his children, Marquita L. Nelson, Carla M. Nelson, James C. Nelson Jr. (Jamie Nelson), Crystal L. Nelson, Alicia M. Johnson (Harding Johnson), Hilary Garzarelli (Mark Garzarelli), John Nelson and Jason Nelson (Johanna Nelson); his stepchildren, Brian Bacote (Kelly Bacote), Clinton Bacote (Michelle Bacote) and Kim Bacote; and his sister Barbara Lucas (Willie Lucas). He is also survived by 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, January 14th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home (88 E Main St, Meriden, CT 06450). A funeral service was held on Thursday, January 15th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church (84 Franklin St, Meriden, CT 06450).
