He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Preston and Louise Preston; his son Michael L. Preston (Beaulah); his grandson Tyjuan Lewis; and his siblings, Clara Preston, James Preston, Joseph Preston, Thomas Preston, Robert Preston and Charles Preston.

He is survived by: his wife Cynthia M. Preston (Marrow); his children, Lorna Preston, Sandra Preston, John D. Preston (Cynthia), Yolanda McLemore (David), Thomas Brent Gaither (Janice), Lori Gaither-Gordon (Alphonso), Michelle Walker (Conrad) and Marshall Gaither; his grandchildren, Tamarah Baker (Kelsey), Sirmirah Lewis, Kyra Preston, Tawana Preston, Brandon Preston, Gerald Preston (Athena), Darrell Preston, Corynn Young (Corina), India Thomas and Maya McLemore; and his baby-sister Loretta Preston of Lynchburg, VA. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
