He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Avery and Mary Avery (Forrest); and his siblings, Richard Avery, Ronald Avery, Edward Avery and Joan Curran.

He is survived by: his wife Vivian Avery; his children, Sherry Avery of Somers, Robert J. Avery, Jr. (Wendy) of Colchester and Karen Szymko (Thomas) of Somers; his grandchildren, Meagan Avery, Zachary Szymko and Erin Avery; his siblings-in-law, Stasia and Bill Buss; his nieces, Theresa Buss and Samantha Baer; and his nephew Bill Buss.
