He was predeceased by : his parents, Charles Schmidt and Gertrude Schmidt (Carey); his wife Rita M Schmidt; and his brothers, Charlie and Gene Schmidt.

He is survived by : his former life partner Theresa Schmidt; his children, Norman K. Schmidt and Lisamay Cleary-Cast (Bruce Cast); his stepson Anthony P Ciminera; his grandchildren, Joshua Cleary, Jordan Burns, Lisa Cleary (Grzywacz), Justin Cast, Hannah Cleary, Christopher Coleman, Alyssa (Cast) and Jonathan Nielsen; and his great grandchildren, Andrew Hornack, Andrew Ciminera, Jack Gaudino, Conner Cast, Luca of Dufour and Mina May Cleary. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their extended families.

Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Indian School.
