He was predeceased by: his parents, Clyde Helmbolt and Agnes Helmbolt (Jensen); his son Cory Helmbolt; his siblings, Marvin and Linda Jo; and his brother-in-law Peter Kray.

He is survived by: his sons, Troy Helmbolt of Norwalk, CT and Shawn Helmbolt (Crystal) of Brookings, SD; his grandchildren, Taylor Jones (Tanner) of Sioux Falls, SD, Tanner Helmbolt of Rincon, GA, Preston of Brookings, SD, Tate of Brookings, SD and Lincoln Helmbolt of Brookings, SD; his great grandchildren, Parker, Owen and Cole; and his siblings, Roger Helmbolt (Cindy) of Watertown, SD and Marilyn Kray of Clara City, MN. He is also survived by four nieces and one nephew.
