He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Smyth and Margaret Smyth; and his sister Ursula. He is survived by: his wife Eileen of County Kerry; his children, Sinead, Thomas, Aisling (Goff) and Ciara (Bisceglia); his sons-in-law, Patrick Goff and Peter Bisceglia; his grandchildren, Aidan, Lucas, Robert, Patrick, Margot, Thomas, Peter, Shiloh and Martin; and his siblings, Rosaleen (Waters), Margaret, Carmel, Philip and Colm. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family.
