He was predeceased by: his parents, John Bates and Vivian Bates (Casagrande); his brothers, Augie Bates, Michael Bates and John "Jack" Bates; his sister-in-law Rita Asselin Bates; and his stepson Kevin Robert.
He is survived by: his wife Lucy Bates (Lagumbay); his children, Michael Bates of Waterbury, Tina Bates Rodriguez of Southington and Stephanie Bates of Middletown; his stepdaughter Kelli Robert of Glastonbury; his grandchildren, Jessica Rodriguez, Jennifer Rodriguez and Tyler Rodriguez; his brother Paul Bates of Winsted; and his sister-in-law Beverly Bates of Wesley Chapel, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
