He is survived by: his mother Nancy Kleinschmidt (McCarthy) of Bristol; his close friend Dianna DiZinno of Waterbury; his son Alex Kleinschmidt (Allison); his siblings, Steven Kleinschmidt (Karen) and Carrie Kleinschmidt (Jennifer Whitcomb); his half-sister Roberta Gentile (Gene); and his godparents, Robert and Ruby Beer of Newtown. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in David's memory may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
