He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph B. Simmons and Elizabeth Morris Simmons of Joe; his brother Anthony Simmons; and his former wife Nancy Riccio Simmons. He is survived by: his children, Carey Foster (William), Joseph Jr., Terry, Elizabeth Simmons, Scott Maksyk Simmons, Alisa Ferrigno, Nancy Sundwall (Michael), William Criscuolo (Michelle), Deanna Brunson (Ben), LaKiesha (Ruben), Darea Cloney and Kristen McWeeney; his siblings, Lucille and Frank Simmons; and his cousin Lucy Mastriano. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren.
