He is survived by: his wife Janet Trufan Backman; his children, Daniel Backman (Jody), Katie Smullen (Sean) and Michael Backman (Marissa); his grandchildren, Avery, Emily and June; his siblings, Karen Backman, Keith Backman (Shaileen), Kenneth Backman and Kristopher Backman (Sherilee); and his father-in-law Hank Trufan.
