He was predeceased by: his wife Louise T. Burns; his parents, Dennis Burns and Ginny Burns (Sessions); and his sister Nancy Burns. He is survived by: his children, Donica Burns-Johnson of Enfield and Dennis T. Burns (Stacee) of Round Rock, TX; his brothers, John Burns of Windsor, Kenneth Burns (Paula) of Madison, Dennis V. Burns (Sandy) of Windsor and Michael Burns of Enfield; and his grandchildren, Chelsey Johnson of Enfield, Cooper Burns and Quinn Burns of Round Rock, TX. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
