It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Charles Harris (Washington, District of Columbia), who passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 98, leaving to mourn family and friends. Though Charles has departed this earthly realm, his legacy endures — a legacy of love that will continue to illuminate the lives of family and friends in the darkest of hours. May his spirit soar on wings of eternal peace, forever cherished in the tender embrace of memory.
He was predeceased by: his parents, John Wesley and Leila Magby Harris; and his siblings, Benjamin Harris and Bernice Dickerson (John). He is survived by: his sister Juanita Jairrels (Clarence) of Anniston. He is also survived by five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins.
Visitation was held on Saturday, December 6th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Dunbarton Memorial Chapel (2900 Van Ness St NW, Washington, DC 20008). A celebration of life was held on Saturday, December 6th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Saturday, December 13th 2025 at the Green Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery (Co Rd 44, Alabama 36830).
While serving as Department Chair, Dr. Harris was instrumental in securing a two million dollar grant from the Ford Foundation to enhance graduate programs in the Department and College. The Ford Foundation grant enabled the Department to hire additional faculty members and increase the number of graduate student fellowships.
