He was predeceased by: his parents, Mamie Hawkins and Bill Hawkins; his wife Tressie L. Hawkins; and his siblings, Marguree Saliim, Dorothy Evans and Willie N. Hawkins.

He is survived by: his children, Corey E. Hawkins (Edith) of Bowie, MD, Gloria Lester (Leonard) of Hawkinsville, GA, Phil Taylor (Maise) of Pompano Beach, FL and James Thomas (Robin) of Hawkinsville, GA; and his siblings, Berneatha Blackwell of Washington, DC, Alma Hayes of Princeton, WV, Evelyn Marine of Suffolk, VA, James Hawkins (Odessa) of Columbia, SC, Lee Hawkins (Eva Mae) of Hartsville, SC and Roy Hawkins (Bessie) of Hartsville, SC.. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
