He was predeceased by: his parents, Otho L. Davis and Pauline E. Meelheim Davis (Maitha); his former wife Shirley N. Oliphant; his grandparents, Betty and Paul Meelheim; his granddaughter Kay Lee Dykes; and his stepson Raymond Garrett.
He is survived by: his wife Peggy Garrett-Davis; his sister-in-law Beverly Meyers of Kentucky; his children, James L. Davis, Jr. (Brenda), Sandra L. Brown (David) of Mardela Springs, MD and Shelly D. Dykes (Scott) of Delmar, DE; his stepsons, Mark Garrett of Connecticut, Jeffrey Garrett of Baltimore, MD and Michael Garrett (Leah) of Dagsboro, DE; his grandchildren, Andrew Davis (Lorena) of San Diego, Bryan Davis (Ting Wu) of Washington, DC, James L Davis III, Lindsey Smith (Scott) of Laurel, DE, Nicole Johnson (Jefferson Calloway) of Collegeville, Kyle Dykes (Shannon Joyce) of Hebron, MD, Kelci Smiley (Tavon) of Delmar, DE, Konner Dykes (Madelyn Sansone) of Sharptown, MD and Kaila Dykes (David Morgan Jr) of Laurel, DE; and his stepgrandchildren, Madeline Bierman (Nicholas), Tyler Garrett, Ian Garrett and Erin Epperson (Joseph). He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
