He was predeceased by: his birth father George; his mothers, Stella Schmittinger and Naomi Martin; and his brothers, Danny Schmittinger and Willis Martin Jr..

He is survived by: his birth mother Stella Schmittinger; his wife Sharon Schmittinger; his daughters, Lisa Thomson (Charles) of Dover and Deborah Edwards (Brian) of Dover; his granddaughters, Emily Christianson (Isaac), Elizabeth Thomson Hennessy (Brandon), Rachel Thomson Troyer (Dylan) and Sarah Edwards; and his sister Shirley Wallace. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and church friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Capitol Baptist Church, 401 Kesselring Avenue, Dover, DE 19904.
