He is survived by: his daughters, Susan Whaley (Jeff Whaley) and Nancy Shwed; his grandchildren, Jordan Whaley, Zachary Whaley (Rachel), Garrett Whaley and Sara Jo Whaley (Jose Sabinon Lopez); and his great grandchildren, Everett Whaley, Leonardi Sabinon Whaley and Lukas John Sabinon Whaley.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Laurel Community Foundation, P.O. Box 81, Laurel, Delaware 19956.

“I moved to John's neighborhood in 2024, and he was the first person to welcome me. I did not know at the time he was the mayor. I would see him daily walking his daughter's dog, Jackson and would stop and chat with him and pet Jackson every time I saw him. Seeing him at the 4th of July Parade and Car Show events will be missed. He was a great man, and he will be missed by all who knew him. He was a great asset to the Town of Laurel. Al Adams - Laurel”
