He was predeceased by: his parents, Aubrey Carter and Kathleen Carter (O'Bannon); his wife Kelly Anne Carter (Smith); his daughter Elizabeth O'Bannon Raper; his granddaughter-in-law Amy Quinn Carter; and his siblings, A. Temple Carter, Jr., Robert H. Carter, James O and Carolease C. Reed.
He is survived by: his children, Edward B. Carter, Jr. (Susan) and Anne Howie Brooks (William, Jr.); his son-in-law Byrle D. Raper; his grandchildren, Edward Bates Carter III, Bryant J. Carter, Robert M. Brooks, Garry E. Peeler, Benjamin J. Peeler, Elizabeth O'Bannon Carter (Brian) and Suzanne Carter Courtenay (Matthew); and his friend Pat Kraut. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces.
