He was predeceased by: his parents, Ottmar J. Gastel and Catherine M. Gastel; and his niece Catherine Louise Steele. He is survived by: his wife Karen A. Gastel; his sisters, Joan Gastel and Peggy Wilson; his nieces and nephews, Ann, Pete Hallet, Lee, Robert Edwards, Bill, Cindy Taylor, Joe, Rita Taylor, Ernest Taylor, John, Donna Taylor, Leonard Wilson and Christopher Wilson; Mary Magdeline Taylor.
