He was predeceased by: his parents, Anthony Gillespie and Nora Gillespie (Doherty); his daughter Patricia Gillespie; and his siblings, Mary Brennan, John Gillespie, Anthony Gillespie and Bridgitt Boyle.
He is survived by: his wife Lois Gillespie (Caddoo); his children, James P. Gillespie Jr., Daniel Gillespie, Elizabeth DePadova and Sara DePadova; his grandchildren, Shannon, Shaun, Sarah and Sherlyn; his great grandchildren, Patrick, Connor, Lane, Lucas, Levi and Trip; his niece Karen Dwyer; and his nephew Kevin Brennan.
