He is survived by: his mother Joyce Rutherford (Arnold); his wife Jamie Hackney Rutherford; his children, Samantha Cahall (Brandon), Nolan and Jack Rutherford; his grandsons, Ethan and Emmett Cahall; his sister Cindy Givens; and his pet Jade.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made in John's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Delaware Hospice Center of Milford, DE, and North American Game Warden Museum in Rolette County, ND.
