He was predeceased by : his parents, Walter Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Smith; his son Walter Smith; and his siblings, Elizabeth M. Taylor, Diane Smith and Christopher Smith.

He is survived by : his wife Gladiola Howard; his sister Mary Kate Stephens-Cooper (Ernest) of Wilmington, Delaware; his siblings-in-law, Dalene Tolbert, Emma Love (Robert) and James Howard; his son Roland Smith (Shani); his grandchildren, Breanna Rappa (David), Jo'nae Smith and Ava Smith; his great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Nova, David, Jr. and Lyric; his niece Kim Smith; and his nephew Thurmond Smith. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and friends.
