He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Lee Gilbert and Annie Marie Wilson; and his brother Sam Griffis. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Law Gilbert; his children, Bonnie Gilbert of Macclenny, FL, Johnny Lee Gilbert, Jr. of Bryceville, FL and Melissa Crews of Jacksonville, FL; his stepdaughter Sandy Epps Guess of Glen St; and his siblings, Donnie Griffis (Jane) of Glen St, Rodney Gilbert (Cindy) of Blairsville, GA, George "Randy" of Glen St and Karen Griffis of Macclenny, FL. He is also survived by 9 nephews and nieces; 9 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
