He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Floyd Orzo Mayo and Letha Ardena Roberson Mayo; his wife Nancy; his son David Mayo (Gretchen); his granddaughters, Kai and Nyah; his stepdaughter Heather Leidecker; his siblings, David Mayo and Dena Thurmond (Don); his brother-in-law William Rayburn; his extended family Sherry Thurmond; his niece Michelle Ibsen (Drake); his great-nephew Cole Ibsen (Karstin); and his great-niece Lennon Ibsen.
An endowment for Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy was established 2010 through the Baptist Health Foundation to provide for training and support for chaplains.
