He was predeceased by : his parents, Ruth (A. M. Smith) and Andy; his wife Carol Wardlaw Smith; and his former life partner Maribeth Fogle Smith. He is survived by : his sons, Wade and Stephen (Melodie); his siblings, Mary Catherine McDowell (Rodger) and Jimmy (Jenny B.); his grandchildren, Kailey Palmer (Angus) and Jakob (Kyla); and his great grandchild Knox Anderson Smith. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
