He was predeceased by: his father James Fielding Howell; his parents-in-law, Nattie "Buddy" Harris and Alma Harris; and his uncles, Josh West and Big Ma (Hattie West).
He is survived by: his wife Mary Howell; his children, Denise Fears (Kevin), James Adam Howell (Kymberli) and Justin Alan Howell (Taylor); his mother Mary Catherine Howell (West); his grandchildren, James Ian Lamar Fears (Ashley), Dallas Norman, Jasper Howell and Kinslee June Howell; his great grandchild Jackson Theodore Marcus Fears; and his sisters, Linda Bolman (Roger), Cathy Whitaker (Leonard) and Betty Ann Howell. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
