She is survived by: her sons, Peter Hawley (Christina Deoudes), N. J. and Mark Hawley; and her brothers, Richard S. Wise (Joyce) of Richmond, VA and H. Alexander Wise (Carrington) of Memphis, TN. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In her mind, the highlight of her career was being selected by the American Library Association to serve on the 1993 Newbery Award Selection Committee to choose "the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for children.".
