He was predeceased by: his parents, Marija "Milka" Jurićin Bakija and Marijan Bakija. He is survived by: his pet Coast; his siblings, Ante, Perina and Berislav; his wife Anita; his children, Jon (Rebeccah Kamp), Peter (Caitlin Finlay) and Mary; his grandchildren, Miriam and Jude; his sister Ruja; his friend Trish; and also, Ashleigh and Caitlin. He is also survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In 1964, with the help of a French Catholic charity, he emigrated to the United States, was granted asylum, and settled in New York City, where his first cooking job was at the World Fair.
