He was predeceased by: his parents, Pearl Smith, and Howard Smith, Sr.; his grandparents, Frances, Frank Wiley, Sr., Roxanna and Frederick Smith, Sr.; his parents-in-law, Earl and Thelma Lyons; his brother Harry Smith; his brothers-in-law, Allen Lyons and Earl Cannon; his nephews, Terrell Lyons, Eric Lyons and David Cannon; his niece Victoria DiPierro; his stepgranddaughter Tasha Pearson; his great grandchild Joshua Levine; his great-nephew James Burke; and his great grandchild DJ Walker.

He is survived by: his wife Ruth Smith; his children, Janine Tucker (Dale), Janet Kern and Howard Smith III; his siblings, David Smith and Melodie DiPierro (Chuck); and his brother-in-law Bert Lyons. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one step granddaughter, one step great grandson, two adopted granddaughters and seven adopted great granddaughters along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
