He was predeceased by: his parents, John Chambers Thiell and Lillian Meyers Thiell; and his sisters, Nonie, Hopp Pierpoint, Jane and Oakie O'Connor.
He is survived by: his wife Edith; his children, Richard (Cherie) and Jacqueline (Brian); and his grandchildren, Benjamin, John, Jillian (Matt), Kelsey and Stephen.
