He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Elnathan and Virginia Advida Daniels Wharton; and his siblings, Charles Wharton, John Wharton, Mary Jackson and Richard Wharton.

He is survived by: his children, Martha Louise Wharton (Baltimore, MD), Donna Wharton-Fields (Beltsville, MD), David Eugene Wharton of Winter Garden, FL and NJ; his family, Terri A. Washington of Dracut, MA and Andrew D. Washington of Chelmsford, MA; Gary Costa and Anne Washington. He is also survived by his colleagues, protégés, many friends, nieces and nephews, adult children, and five grandchildren.
