He was predeceased by: his parents, Ian Bates and Kathleen Bates; his siblings, Christine Taylor and Philip Bates; and his siblings' children, Matthew Taylor and Narelle Richardson.
He is survived by: his wife Carol; his children, Emily Sullivan (Ryan), Ian (Kimball), Meredith Schaller (Chris) and Philip (Olivia); his grandchildren, Quinn, Lily, Berit Sullivan, Liam and Jane Schaller; and his brothers, Anthony (Sue) and Michael (Patty). He is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in his name to St. Ann's Center for Children, South Hills Catholic Academy, or Easton, MD Volunteer Fire Department.
