Carmen Delgado Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Carmen Delgado of Miami, Florida, who passed away on April 1, 2023, at the age of 99, leaving to mourn family and friends. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Carmen Delgado to pay them a last tribute.

[en español abajo] CARMEN DELGADO, born in Pijirigua, Artemisa, Cuba, passed away on April 1, 2023. She was born in 1924 but when she immigrated to the U.S., her birthdate was recorded as 1922, so her life was celebrated as though she had reached 100. Either way, she lived more than enough life to fit in those years. She was a devoted grandmother, mother, wife, and friend. She leaves behind a niece, Beatriz “Betty” Lopez; a nephew, José Vazquez; her grandchildren: Addrian Delgado; Brian Delgado; Alex Delgado, father of her great-granddaughter Camila Delgado; Denise Delgado, mother of her great-granddaughter, Indira Sakata; and Paul Delgado, father of her great-grandchildren Andres, Milana, and Remy Delgado.

Carmen was born María Cruz del Carmen Vázquez Hernández in a rural small town, daughter of Felipa Hernandez and Agustín Vazquez. She was one of ten children. Her siblings were Manuela, Estanislao “Tata,” Felipa, Irene “Chita,” Julian, Maria, Miguel, Ramón, and Victorina. She moved to the nearby town of Candelaria where she married her husband, Senén Ismael Delgado, on April 20, 1950, and had two sons, Zenen Dario and Nelson. About ten years later they moved to La Habana to seek treatment for Zenen’s asthma, and in 1961, both boys came to the U.S. through Operation Peter Pan.

Carmen arrived in the U.S. on March 8, 1962 and took up residence in Miami Beach, where she lived for most of her life. She immediately began working as a housekeeper and raised her two sons on her own until her husband was able to reunite with the family in 1967. She worked in homes and hotels as a housekeeper and babysitter until she retired in her early 70s. She was an excellent cook and made countless memorable meals for her family. She attended the La Gorce Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for many years. Her faith and service to Jehovah were a huge part of her life until her health declined after her husband’s death in 2011.

Well into her eighties, day in and day out Carmen prepared three meals a day and kept her home spotless, saying “¡Yo no paro!” (I don’t stop!) Her strength, determination, faith in God, and appreciation for the simple pleasures of food and family carried her through many losses. The great sorrow of her life was the death of both of her sons in 1999 and 2006, as well as her beloved husband of 61 years.

For the last 12 years of her life, she lived at Helen Sawyer Plaza in Miami, where she was beloved by Miguel Jorge, Idania Bolufe, and many others who cared for her every day. She will be remembered for being a fighter, loving and kind, with a big laugh and a big personality: candela—a firecracker—until the end.
