Fred Shoup wrote a sympathy message

“Nirvani and I met over the telephone some forty years ago. She had been renting my apartment, through an agent, while at the IADB in Washington during an overseas assignment of mine; but this had ended, and I had to tell Mrs. Lam, as I then addressed her, that I’d be needing the apartment. After a second she replied, in tones of the politest regret, “Oh, Mr. Shoup, I’m so sorry you’re coming back.” How her talk (especially about her family) warmed me then and ever after! Best wishes..”
