He was predeceased by: his parents, William Van Stewart and Emily Alligood Stewart. He is survived by: his former wife Mary Hamilton (Gene); his children, Jarrod Stewart and Katherine Atwater (Brad); his granddaughters, Anna Kate and Allie Claire Atwater; and his siblings, Dan Stewart (Ava), Jerry Stewart (Nancy) and Sherry Smith (Greg). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins.

As a senior, he was awarded the Pensacola Junior College Foundation Scholarship.
