Richard Mercer Roberts Sr. Obituary
Richard Mercer Roberts Sr., 80, passed away peacefully June 26, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born November 30, 1944, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the late Charlotte and Benjamin Roberts. Rick lived a life defined by hard work, strength, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Beginning his working years in the construction industry in Miami, FL, he eventually answered the call of the sea, following a long family legacy as a boat captain and seaman. As a commercial lobster and stone crab fisherman in the Florida Keys, Rick spent decades rising before the sun and living by the tides. He found great joy in the time spent aboard his boats (The Three C's and The Three X's), and took great pride in his family's history as early settlers and founders of Key West.
His children and grandchildren were the center of his world: his greatest joy, his deepest pride, and the truest reflection of his life's work. Rick was a devoted father to Melissa Skelton (deceased), Richard Mercer Roberts Jr. (Elissa), Michelle Roberts Hernandez, John Joseph Roberts, Emily Catherine Murray, and Lauren Lorea Roberts. He was a loving and proud grandfather to Ryan Michael Hernandez, Carson Skelton, Ricky Mercer Roberts, Charlotte Everly Turner, and Elizabeth Lorea Chang-Roberts.
After retiring, Rick divided his time between Branford, Florida, and Nicaragua, where he built a peaceful and fulfilling life. Rick's life encompassed a strong work ethic exemplified through his actions, his industry, and his constant willingness to be there when someone needed him. His presence and his smile were a gift and his absence leaves a quiet, aching space in the hearts of all who knew him. He will always be remembered with love, respect, and gratitude.
A Memorial Service to honor Rick's life will be held at 12:00 p.m., July 12th at O'Brien Baptist Church, 9544 East County Road 349, O'Brien, FL 32071.
