He is survived by: his wife Carla Barrett Schmidt; his children, Melinda "Dawn" Wilkes, Jennifer Leigh Schmidt and Alan "Heath" Schmidt; and his grandchildren, Jennings McCord Wilkes, Anna Madison Wilkes (Cody Veon), Madeleine Noelle Barnhart, Declan Ronan Shine and Faith Ann Schmidt.
