He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Bartels and Lilah Bartels (Nelson); his son Stephen Bartels; and his siblings, Beverly Smith, Barbara Brewer and William Bartels.

He is survived by: his children, Mary Prince (Patrick), John Bartels (Tonya), Ruth Poglitsh (Rudolph) and Rebecca Campbell (Gregory); and his brother Charles Bartels. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In later life, Alzheimer's and cancer threw a curveball.
