He was predeceased by: his parents, Ludwell Ebersole Gaines and Betty Chilton Gaines. He is survived by: his wife Jacqueline Gay Hart; and his children, Ralph Hart Gaines, Jacqueline Gaines Stitt and Laura Gaines Semler. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons.
