He was predeceased by: his parents, Edwin Carmack Black and Lucille Crouch Black; his daughter Dana Ann Black; his stepdaughter Janine Nicole Incandela; and his sisters, Joanne Black Blanton, Shirley Black and Haven.

He is survived by: his wife Sue; his son John Thornton Black of Knoxville, Tennessee; his stepdaughters, Pam Bart Lane of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Laura Joe Slowinski of Colrain, Massachusetts and Julia Gary Wollman of New City; and his grandson Ashton Riley Black. He is also survived by three step-granddaughters; nine step-grandsons; and numerous step-great-grandsons, step-great-granddaughters, and great-great-granddaughters.

A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, September 1st 2026 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the Mount Olivet Funeral Home & Cemetery (1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN 37210). Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 1st 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 1st 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Mount Olivet Cemetery (1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN 37210).
