He was predeceased by: his parents, Manuel Duarte and Maria Lavado; his former wife Victoria; his wife Patrocinia; and his daughter Emilia Afonso.

He is survived by: his daughter Fatima Lavado of Palm Coast; his grandchildren, Matthew, Michael Fernandes, Ashley, Tyler Ruivo, Lucia Laranjeiro, Michelle Maio and Victoria Geada; and his siblings, Joaquim Duarte and Rosa Ferreira of Portugal. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren.
