He was predeceased by : his parents, Albert W. Gaines and Stella Gaines; his son Doug Gaines; and his brothers, Gary and Rick Gaines.

He is survived by : his wife Joyce Gaines; his children, David (Melanie) of Granite Falls, NC, Belinda Todd (Warren) of Milton, FL, Sharleen Luoma (Jon) of Pensacola, FL and Angela Connell (Steve) of Matthews, NC.; and his siblings, Steve Gaines (Jeweldyn) of Lenoir, NC, Albert Jr. Gaines (Pat) of Lenoir, NC, Jackie Cardwell (Ronnie) of Lenoir, NC, Sandy Maust (George) of Lenoir, NC, Susie Nichols (Johnny) of Hudson, NC and Walter Gaines (Sandra) of Buffalo, SC.. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Walter and Gaines wrote a sympathy message

“My wonderful brother, oh how I/we miss you! It still doesn’t seem real. I’ve picked up my phone 100 times to call you or see if you called me. I know you’re no longer suffering and how tired you were. It hurts so bad. Dad always called us “The Dutch Twins” because where you saw one of us, you saw the other growing up. I know you’re happy seeing all of our family, and friends there with our Lord in Heaven. We will see each other again and until we do, save me a hunting spot in the woods.”
