He was predeceased by: his sisters, Ann Stoutamire (Shuler), Ruby Tribble (Trib), Grettza Jones (Jim) and Elnora Louise Shuler; and his stepsons, Chesley Blackmon and Christopher Blackmon.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn; his children, Mark (Cheryl), Jeffrey Shuler, Suzanne Clarke (Brian), Heidi Shuler and Rosemary Santos (Shuler); his grandsons, Joshua Beachboard, David Beachboard, Daniel Beachboard, Aaron Osteen, Brent Shuler and Alex Santos; his stepgrandsons, Christopher Sadowski and Shawn Sadowski; and his brother Joseph T. Shuler. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren.
