He was predeceased by: his parents, Val A. Schmitz and Julia Hughes Schmitz; and his siblings, Dorothea and Robert. He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Madajewski; his children, John Jr. (Krissy) of Smithsburg, MD., Anne (David) of Burnsville, NC and Karen (Dana) of Fruit Cove, FL; and his grandchildren, Cameron, Joshua, Alex Knies, Austin Schmitz, Anthony John Gowda and Taylor Schmitz.
