David Wilcox Sowersby Obituary
David Wilcox Sowersby, age 86, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2021at the Bailey Family Center for Caring. He was born to Phillip Charles and Crystal Marie (Wilcox) Sowersby on May 2, 1935, in Schnectady, New York. He grew up in Kenilworth, IL., a suburb of Chicago, and graduated from Newtrier High School in Kenilworth. David served his country in the U.S. Army during the cold war and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. After his discharged, he attended DePauw University, graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Economics. David learned to love the game of golf at a young age and was a very skilled golfer.
He met his wife to be, Sara Bockwinkel, at the Driftwood Lounge in Milwaukee, IL. Davis and Sara married at the River Forest Methodist Church in River Forest, IL. and started their married life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. David worked for 36 years as a District Manager for Crane Packing Co. dealing mostly in pump seals. For many years David lived in White Fish Bay where he and Sally raised a family of three sons. David was very active in the life of his family and especially enjoyed travelling and camping all over the country, having visited 47 states through the years. In 1996 he moved to Brevard, N.C. where he opened his own business, Southtown Sales, and owned a vacation home in Espinola, New Mexico. He had been a resident of St. Augustine, FL since 2000. David enjoyed an active retirement, continuing to golf. He organized a senior golf league at World Gold Village, and was a member of the Village Church, where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. David was very outgoing and never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sally Sowersby of St. Augustine, FL.; sons John David Sowersby (Sarah), James Allen Sowersby (Wynn), and Peter Charles Sowersby (Nanette); his brother, Robert Phillip Sowersby (Mary) of Philadelphia, PA.; and grandchildren, Allen, Cate, Wil, Alice and Noel Coler.
A celebration of David's life will be held at 1pm on Friday, November 5, 2021 at the Village Church with Rev. Bob May officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to: Community Hospice of NE FL – Bailey Center or to the St. Augustine Humane Society.
