He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerda Martha Agnes Muhs and Rodolfo Schafer; and his wife Carolyn Gagliardi. He is survived by: his children, Hugo Diego and Marcela Schafer; his former spouse Robert; and his brother Manfredo Schafer. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Herbert asked that a donation be made, on his behalf, to the Jacksonville Humane Society.
