She was predeceased by: her parents, Stanley Whitacre and Zelda Whitacre (Bordner); her brother Richard Whitacres (Dick); her sisters-in-law, Joan Whitacre and Janet Whitacre; and her sibling's children, Jan Lee Bibee and Theodore Whitacre (Marna Dale Smith).

She is survived by: her spouse Melissa Hastings; her brother James Whitacre (Vicki); and her sibling's children, Cheryl Tavan (Jim), Stacey Whitacre, William Whitacre (Joan), Scott Whitacre (Donna) and Jamie Whitacre (Melanie).

Charitable donations may be made in Ms. Shaffer's memory to the animal rescue organization of the donor's choice.
