He was predeceased by: his parents, Edith Crouse Cates and Howard B Cates, Sr.; and his sister Patricia Cates Bischoff. He is survived by: his wife June Lambert Cates; his children, Howard B Cates III (Lisa), David C. Cates (Lynne) and Tammy Cates Engelman (Michael); and his stepdaughters, Pamela Steele (Harry), Patricia Wanco (Mark) and Joanna Seibert. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
