He was predeceased by: his parents, Beulah Messer and James Messer Sr.. He is survived by: his wife Margaret Messer; his children, Graham Messer (Rosie), Robert Stewart (Tracey), Bill Stewart (Mireille), Matt Stewart (Linnea), Moret Prokopcuks (Alex) and Mindy Rubin; and his grandchildren, Alaina, Alek, Ryan, Landon, Liam, Ashton, Emma, Mattias, Sebastian, Christian and Aubrey.

The family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, Big Bend Hospice or the American Heart Association.
